Most old hand tools can be cleaned with simple supplies. Start with the least aggressive method and work up. For light rust, wipe with an oily rag. For moderate rust, use a vinegar soak for a few hours, then scrub with steel wool. For heavy rust or pitting, use a dedicated rust remover, then dry the metal right away to prevent new rust.
Wooden handles can be cleaned with light sandpaper and boiled linseed oil. Cracked handles can be replaced on common tools, but on rare or collectible tools, a original handle often adds value even if it is worn.
Sharpening is worth your time on chisels, plane irons, and saws. A sharp tool sells faster and is safer to use. For screwdrivers, hammers, and wrenches, sharpening is usually not needed. Clean, oil, and photograph them instead.
Donate tools when the resale value is low and the cleanup is heavy. Schools, theater groups, and community workshops often want working tools even if they are not perfect. Recycle bent, cracked, or unsafe tools instead of passing them on.
